End of Year Message from Kevin Brown, Speaker & Author of The Hero Effect
I’ve learned a few things in 2020... One of the most important things I’ve learned is about the importance of hope in leadership. While hope is not a strategy, no strategy is possible without hope. Hope is that daily inspiration that helps us to put one foot in front of the other. Hope is that one thing that allows us to embrace a vision for the future as we think about 2021 and life returning to the way we remember it. Hope is vision's cheerleader. Every day showing up saying you can do this, you can get there, you'll get through this, we'll make it. And it allows us to take that faithful action to move toward our vision and our dreams and goals in 2021 and beyond!

Do What You Can (Kevin Brown - The Hero Effect)
Переглядів 1,4 тис.3 роки тому
Theodore Roosevelt said, "Do what you can with what you have where you are." So many people just go through life coasting, going through the motions. The great ones, the people who excel at work, who build great companies, the high achievers in life, they're always great stewards of where they are right now. They understand that now always leads to next. Because if we do a great job right now, ...

Running Stream (Kevin Brown - The Hero Effect)
Переглядів 3353 роки тому
The great philosophy professor Howard Hendricks said, "I would rather my students drink from a running stream than a stagnant pool." So many people go through life as a stagnant pool. They never learn; they never grow; they're content to just be where they are. Nobody wants to drink from a stagnant pool. People want to be around people who are feeding them, who are helping them to grow. As lead...

Heroes See Life Through the Lens of Optimism (Kevin Brown - The Hero Effect)
Переглядів 1,4 тис.4 роки тому
Today I challenge you to wear the lens of optimism. Optimism is not overlooking our current circumstances and situations, but rather looking at them head on with hope and a greater vision of what could be. Even as we grieve and acknowledge our own failures and those around us, with optimism we can begin to see people not just as they are, but as they can be. We’ll begin to see life not just as ...

Feeling so sorry for the server whose only sin was not being overly friendly to this man, but who provided him and his family with the meals they requested and needed. Imagine if this story even hinted at some compassion for a service worker whose situation we can never know. I've been thinking about this story for three years- but not in a positive way.

Thank you for the note. You are absolutely right. We don’t know what we don’t know. The fact that I was unhappy with our server’s less than pleasant demeanor did not cause a reciprocal response. She was treated with kindness and respect by our family. She was addressed with “please and thank you” throughout our meal. And, she received a nice gratuity for her trouble. The point of the story is that when you CHOOSE to work in hospitality at the happiest place on earth, there is an expectation of a world-class experience by the guests paying a small fortune to be there. Everybody is dealing with something and we all have bad days. Thankfully, we always have a choice when we show up and do what we do. I have never heard anyone say that their problems got worse because they were being nice to others. Chances are that our chef(Aunt Bea), was dealing with “stuff” in her life too. But we would have never known it because she was focused on creating an experience we would never forget.

This was a great story and made me think of my own son and his Disney experience. He also has autism and there was a moment he became overwhelmed and I was overwhelmed, then an employee walked over and asked to help him exercise. It really made the day magical that they stopped and helped.

Just saw you at my daughter’s college graduation ceremony, she is an amazing elementary music teacher, she got her Masters of Education Leadership Degree... it has been a long road for her but your speech had a profound effect on all who heard your speech that day, I could not hold back the tears, you made me see the Hero effect in my daughter, that’s what she does already, after hearing your speech she will always remember what the Hero Effect is about and always strive to be the BEST. I immediately ordered two books, but I will order two more. First two was for my daughter , the second for me, the third will be for my soon graduating granddaughter in social services and fourth for my soon graduating daughter in nursing... Hero’s for sure! Thank you for sharing your story, it blessed all our hearts

John Maxwell once said that people always approach him and say, "I want to do what YOU do!" Maxwell always replies, "That's great but are you willing to DO...what I DID?" Dedicate yourself to getting up at Zero Dark Thirty every day and write for 2-3 hours...for years. Taking any speaking gig you can get for peanuts to practice your craft and carrying your own books from town to town and sitting and signing for anyone that was inspired to purchase on, then folding up your little card table, collecting your $200, grabbing your remaining books and driving to the next little church for 5, 10, 15 years before anyone knows your name or cares about you? THAT'S how I get to do what I NOW do" As Malcom Gladwell writes in "The Tipping Point"...10K hours, laboring in obscurity. (Of course people should keep that in mind before they spend a ton to become a "Certified Maxwell Speaker".)
